Once upon a time, it seemed that a crooked tooth or two could ruin your smile, but this is now a thing of the past, thanks to the improvements made in modern, cosmetic dentistry. Using Invisalign braces, we can help you improve your smile by straightening out crooked or misaligned teeth.
What is Invisalign?
Although it may have a pretty high-tech sounding name, this treatment is essentially a small clear brace that is custom moulded to fit around your teeth. This brace is then worn for a set amount of time, usually around 12 months, at which point it should no longer be required. The goal of the guard is to place a small amount of pressure on your teeth, in order to realign them to a more aesthetically pleasing position within your gum line, and is a treatment that our dentist in Zetland often recommends.
The fitting process
Having one of these modern invisible braces fitted is a relatively quick and easy process for our patients. When you come in for your appointment, our dentist in Zetland will normally use LEDs or Lasers to map out the topography of your teeth. This data will then be used to produce a 3D model of your mouth that our dentist can then manipulate, in order to show you how we will craft a brace that will realign your teeth. Often, we’ll be able to show you a simulation of what your smile will look like after your treatment.
Our team, at the Healthy Smile Centre, will fit your brace with minimal discomfort and will help guide you in caring for your guard as you straighten up those pesky teeth.
The advantages of Invisalign
There are numerous benefits to using this treatment, aside from it realigning your crooked teeth. As an example, because the braces themselves are see-through, you don’t have to be too concerned about other people seeing them whilst you go about your day.
Another benefit is that they’re very easy to clean as they can be taken out of your mouth easily. We’ll recommend a cleaning product for you to soak your braces in, then you lightly brush this over the appliance, roughly once every other day. Also avoid soaking it in mouthwash, as the chemicals can dye or damage the brace.
Aftercare advice for patients
Once you leave our practice there’s a few things to keep in mind so that the realignment process goes smoothly. First off, because we are gently forcing your teeth into a new position, our patients have described feeling “pressure” whilst wearing their brace. Whilst not painful, it can cause discomfort after a while so, in order to counteract this, we recommend that you use store bought painkillers when appropriate. You can also remove the appliance for a small period of time to ease some of the discomfort, but generally you should be wearing it at least 22 hours a day.
Also caring for your Invisalign brace doesn’t require anything particularly complicated either. Generally, we advise our patients to store it in a hard bodied container, to keep the guard from getting damaged or picking up bacteria from surfaces around your home.
All treatment carries risks. Individual consultation is required with one of our practitioners to ensure that the treatment is right for you.
