Wisdom teeth: in or out?

Wisdom teeth: in or out?

by | Jan 5, 2022

The idea that everyone has to undergo wisdom teeth extraction in Erskineville as some sort of rite of passage into adulthood is no longer valid. Wisdom teeth are a bit like tonsils: time was, if there was any problem at all with them, the accepted treatment was removal and out they’d come. Now, we are far less gung-ho with removing body parts, including wisdom teeth.

What are wisdom teeth?
They are your very back molars and they come through (or not) in early adulthood, and sometimes years later.

Why do they develop problems?
Many people do not have big enough jaw space to accommodate more than 28 teeth, so wisdom teeth, if they come through at all, can get jammed up against the tooth in front as they try to descend. This is what we call an impacted wisdom tooth. It can lead to discomfort and infection and can damage the tooth that is being pressed against.

Wisdom teeth do not always become impacted, but when they do, there is a chance you will need to have wisdom teeth extraction in Erskineville with us at Healthy Smile Centre.

How does extraction work?
We will start off by taking x-rays of your wisdom teeth to see exactly what is going on under the gums, and this will tell us how easy wisdom teeth extraction in Erskineville is going to be. It is usually easier to extract them from the upper jaw than the lower jaw.

We do the extractions under local anaesthetic, and you can also have sedation to calm you down if you are anxious. We may close the area with stitches.

You can expect to have swollen gums and soreness for a while afterwards. If you are in pain, you can use over-the-counter painkillers to deal with it. It is important to keep your mouth clean, but not to dislodge any blood clots that form over the site.

We will want to see you again about a week after wisdom teeth extraction in Erskineville, to check that everything is healing up well. We will also need to remove your stitches.
