Is that toothache wisdom teeth?

If you are aged 17-25 or older and have started to experience toothache at the back of the mouth, it could be time for wisdom teeth extraction in Erskineville with the Healthy Smile Centre.

What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are molars situated at the very back of the mouth. They don’t tend to come through until you are at least 17, and sometimes they don’t come through until later in life, sometimes they never do. They are an extra set of chewing teeth (molars) from the days when we did a lot more chewing than we do now.

What goes wrong with wisdom teeth?
Because we all chew so much less than in the past, our jaws are often smaller and there is not enough room for the wisdom teeth to come through straight. Often, they try to come through at an angle and end up jammed up against the tooth in front. This can be where the toothache you are experiencing comes from.

Unfortunately, having one tooth jammed up against another like this is bad news for both teeth; cysts or abscesses can develop and this can jeopardise both teeth. Far better to get wisdom teeth extraction in Erskineville than lose both teeth.

Does it hurt?
At Healthy Smile Centre, we perform wisdom teeth extraction under local anaesthetic in a safe and sterile procedure. Before we go ahead, we will take x-rays of your teeth to see exactly what is going on. If you are nervous, we can offer you sedation.

Aftercare
You need to take good care of yourself after wisdom teeth extraction in Erskineville. You have just had a body part removed, after all. You might need a bit of bed rest for the first day. Expect there to be some swelling and to need over-the-counter painkillers.

You can gently wash your mouth out and use a soft-bristled brush to clean your teeth. You should have a blood clot over the site and it is important that you do not disturb it. It is the equivalent of a scab and is there to help you heal.
